Chef Messy Sleeves Cookbook
Riley (aka Chef Messy Sleeves) and I spent the last few months working on a huge collaborative art project - Riley's very first cookbook! Now that Christmas has passed we can actually post some info about it -- we didn't want to ruin any Christmas present surprises before.

Some of the recipes in the cookbook are family favorites, but most of them are recipes that Riley and I came up with in our test kitchen. Riley and I each did illustrations for the book and then I laid them all out. We think it turned out pretty well - and Riley is already back in the kitchen coming up with recipes for our next cookbook.

Here are some sample pages from our cookbook.

Keep an eye out for our Chef Messy Sleeves website where you can share recipes, submit photos for the Messy Chef gallery and more. It will be launching soon. (=

Riley's Haunted House
This is the Haunted House Riley and I made - we've been having fun making Halloween decorations. (= I especially like the ghost carrying a pumpkin and making a hasty escape out the chimney. I'm not sure if that was Riley's intention or not - but it's cute!

Riley and I worked on our pumpkin junkin' this weekend. It was a ton of fun.

Riley's Scarecrow
Riley and I decided to use some of the leftover supplies from his self-collage to make a scarecrow. Riley did almost all of the cutting, drew a face with a big scary mouth and thought to use leftover streamers from Cabot's birthday party for the hair and some of the patches on the clothes. Mommy thinks it's more cute than scary. (=

Boo Cards

Riley and I have been making Halloween cards - and he is super excited about them. I told Riley how to write the words and make paper springs. I also drew a couple of ghost outlines for him - but he makes much funner ghosts than I do so I let him do most of them.

Here's how the cards work (in Riley's own words), "First pumpkin confetti falls out all over you when you open the envelope. Then it says, 'BOO!' When you open the card a ghost just POPS out at you and it says, 'Did I Scare You?'!!"

-- Riley said not to show this post to Kenzie because it would ruin her surprise when he mails hers --

Riley's Self-Collage

We missed the Friday when Riley was supposed to make a collage of himself in pre-school, so we did it at home and brought it in to hang up with the rest of them. He made a red and blue shirt just like his favorite one, put a hammer loop on his jeans to hold his hammer, added a chef's hat and a whisk, stuck on some piano stickers, Tigger and Pooh stickers and a ship like the big ones in Duluth.

He also had to fill out a sheet about himself to go with the collage. It's very cool because he picked out all of the collage materials a couple weeks before he did the worksheet and the stuff he picked matches his answers on the worksheet:

My favorite color is: Red
My favorite food is: Chicken Noodle casserole (Riley's recipe)
My favorite story is: "I'm Mighty"
My favorite toy is: That's a tough one - the toy parking ramp Cabot got for his birthday.
My favorite place to go is: DULUTH!
My favorite thing about preschool is: That's a tough one - playing in the apple pie stand
When I watch T.V. I like to watch: "Tigger and Pooh"
When I'm outside I like to play: That's a tough one - on my 2 pirate ships in the backyard
When we go out to eat, I like to go to: Applebees
I think when I get bigger I would like to be: A Chef

Here's how it works!
Grab a child in your life and let them dictate what you all will do. Work how you work so they can see what you do and how you do it. If it's on the computer, give them the mouse to color something in or if your medium of choice is paint, have them paint. Just be creative!! You can see what I do with one of my styles here. Enjoy your time and just have fun! Participation is open to all.
