Fishing

We made some fish we can "catch" with a magnet. Kids have just as much fun with plainlooking fish. But here is how we gave them some style:

I had her choose two colors of rectangles, and give each one a pattern with the same color of marker ("squiggles, stripes, dots, circles," etc)

Mine are on the left, hers are on the right. We drew a fish on one of these,

then cut them out, one on top of the other to duplicate.

We cut triangles out of one of them, which will be glued on top of the other...

Then put a paperclip on each fish, for a magnet-on-a-string to pick them up.

This design was my inspiration. I did this as my first experiment with my digital textures style.

Chef Messy Sleeves Cookbook
Riley (aka Chef Messy Sleeves) and I spent the last few months working on a huge collaborative art project - Riley's very first cookbook! Now that Christmas has passed we can actually post some info about it -- we didn't want to ruin any Christmas present surprises before.

Some of the recipes in the cookbook are family favorites, but most of them are recipes that Riley and I came up with in our test kitchen. Riley and I each did illustrations for the book and then I laid them all out. We think it turned out pretty well - and Riley is already back in the kitchen coming up with recipes for our next cookbook.

Here are some sample pages from our cookbook.

Keep an eye out for our Chef Messy Sleeves website where you can share recipes, submit photos for the Messy Chef gallery and more. It will be launching soon. (=

Snowman !

I was very happy to see the previous monkey post, not only being super cute but now I am sure mine will qualify! I asked Nik to draw me some circles, on paper, scanned and I created the rest digitally. He was so proud of his snowman we made it our Christmas Card. That you for letting me contribute, I look forward to future posts. I personally like to use the slide shows and flash as it keeps my photos safe, if it is not allowed please let me know.

Kenzie's Doodle: Baby Gift

With my due date looming near(er), we're trying to include Kenzie in preparatory projects for the babe. She's helped paint the room, picked out our gender neutral clothing ensembles, and we made these little gifts for the baby.

This is a super easy project for kids:
1. Cut fine grit sandpaper into small portions (3x3's would work well). **I didn't do this and learned the hard way!!

2. Color an image on a fine grit sandpaper with your everyday Crayolas. Make sure and get a healthy wax build up on the sandpaper (Press Hard).

3. Lay the sandpaper, image side down on your fabric choice. (or directly on the onesie if you'd like to be done a few steps sooner!!) Iron the image well to insure the color is transferring.

4. Machine stitch around your image edges to give it extra whimsy, or perhaps, ahem...make sense of the scribbles? This here little guy is a FROG, by the way. :)

5. Attach to a onesie, t-shirt, pants leg, whatever. & Voila. It's an easy Big Sister gift to the new baby...

6. Set the color by tossing into the dryer for 20 minutes. Launder as usual.

We've another version of a darling but LARGE image of big sister holding the baby's hand. We also have an alien. (Yeah....don't know what we're going to do with that one.) But, we're going to frame the large sentimental image and turn it into wall art. I'll post a picture as it's completed.

A Little Studio (space)

No art today (the Woog's at Mother's Day Out) but I did want to share her space in the studio. Since this little corner of my studio has been set up, she draws or colors more than once a day now, on her own doing I might add. She just goes over when she feels like it and doodles. It's pretty funny walking in and seeing different things on the Magna-Doodle.

On another note. It is on my list to do a blog redesign and try and get more people to participate I've set up a flickr group for big and little art, so add your art there too if you have an account.

Corrugated Frame

We made a corrugated frame to match The Squirrel's new Farm Room!
Here's what we did: Take a piece of corrugated cardboard (on the edge, you see that inside is made of wavy cardboard):
Peel off the top layer to reveal the corrugation (easiest to have a tool like a pencil to run up the grooves) This part takes the longest so if your child will lose patience, have this done beforehand):
Then cut an opening of any size, paint and decorate! :

(Then put a piece of cardboard of the same size behind it with the picture inside.)

Here are mine that I made for our baby's nursery:
I drybrushed white on top of the main color, and I used wire flower decorations, very scrapbooky.

Goldy Fish
My (almost 3 yr. old) daughter loves glue sticks, glitter and painting. So, we went with that.

* She did a blue/green finger painting and cut a sun with the circle punch.
* I cut waves from her painting and some construction paper fish.
* She applied glue to everything.
* We tacked it down together and topped it off with glitter.

Here's how it works!
Grab a child in your life and let them dictate what you all will do. Work how you work so they can see what you do and how you do it. If it's on the computer, give them the mouse to color something in or if your medium of choice is paint, have them paint. Just be creative!! You can see what I do with one of my styles here. Enjoy your time and just have fun! Participation is open to all.
