What you need:
crayons
metal cookie cutters (unpainted)
cookie sheet with sides
aluminum foil
oven pre-heated to 250 degrees
1. Collect all your broken (or in our case new for the project) crayons, unwrap them and break them into pieces.
2. Line your cookie sheet with a couple layers of aluminum foil. Then arrange your cookie cutters on the aluminum foil and fill them with assorted crayon pieces.
3. Place cookie sheet in preheated oven. Check after 5 minutes, and then every few minutes, until the crayons are melted. Remove the crayons from the oven and allow to cool for an hour or two. Do not mix or stir the melted crayons.
4. Carefully push crayons out of the cookie cutters and use them to draw fun multi-colored art.

I tried this years ago and ended up ruining a cupcake tray. I also ended up with a bunch of brown big size crayons. What on earth did I do wrong?
Does the quality of the crayons matter (I remember using cheapo's)???
I did notice that you need to use Crayola crayons. I tried some generics and they did not work at all - I think they have more wax and less color or something.... You should try again with Crayola. They still run some, but fill the cookie cutters heaping full and you still end up with nice sized crayons. Also, make sure to line the pan with aluminum foil because you do get some running with all brands of crayons. Sometimes in addition to the flat aluminum foil I bunch more around the cookie cutters. This helps to contain the running and you end up with thicker crayons.
To keep the colors from combining remove them from the oven when they look mostly melty with just a few little solid chunks sticking up - not much though -- and don't stir or mix them. Just let them cool.
It took some practice, but once we got it down we made tons of cool crayons. (=
